We really want to make Christmas great for area kids and with your help, we'll do it. Here's what you can do.

Last Saturday's annual Cans Film Festival at Wehrenberg Theatres was a huge success. Eastern Iowans donated more than 19,000 cans to support 2017 meal programs through the Salvation Army. That's nearly 2,400 cans per hour and about 3,000 more than last year according to Lia Pontarelli, Director of Development and Communications for the Salvation Army in Cedar Rapids. When I spoke to Caitlyn Tennyson from the Salvation Army at Saturday's event she told me last year's Cans Film Festival donations helped create 43,000 meals this year. Thank you for helping meet the needs we know will be there in 2017!

As you know, Christmas is less than three weeks ago. We're asking for help one more time as we assist the Salvation Army Toys for Tots campaign in its final push for the holidays this week. There are two toy drop-off opportunities in the days ahead:

Thursday, December 8 from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.
CBS 2 Toy Drive at 600 Old Marion Road NE

Friday, December 9 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The Salvation Army at 1000 C Ave. NW

That's it, but there's still time for you to help so on behalf of kids, could I ask you to do a little extra shopping?
