Hourly Wage Needed to Afford an Apartment in Iowa
According to Resistance Report, high rent prices have made it difficult for low-income workers to be able to afford the most basic of living arrangements.
The Resistance Report article states that for Iowa, a minimum wage earner must work 60 hours a week in order to afford a one-bedroom apartment. Yikes! Basically, that's like having to work over an eight hour day all week through the weekend. Not fun. The report also shows that an Iowan would have to make at least $14.03 an hour to be able to afford a two-bedroom apartment!
Iowa's minimum wage has recently been debated. It went up in some Iowa counties such as Linn and Johnson. But, the state of Iowa ruled that counties can not set their own minimum wage standards thus bringing the state-wide minimum wage back to $7.25 an hour.
The National Low-Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), according to the Resistance Report article, states that a "worker earning the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour needed to work an average of 90 hours per week to afford a one-bedroom apartment in 2016. The number of hours needed to afford a two-bedroom apartment jumps to 112 hours of minimum wage work."
