Labor Day may mark the end of summer vacation season, but it doesn't prevent the heat and humidity from closing Iowa City Schools two hours early today.

CBS2 reports Iowa City, Tipton, Monticello and Maquoketa schools are among several who will dismiss kids early.

According to the Gazette,  a forecast of temps into the 90's and heat indexes over 100 will lead to the early dismissal today. The school sent e-mails to parents around 10:30 a.m. today to alert them to the decision.

About 23 percent of the Iowa City school district’s classrooms are not air-conditioned, Iowa School Superintendent Steve Murley said in the email.

Fortunately, the heat wave will likely subside in the next few days with our media partners at CBS-TV 2 Weather forecasting a drop in temperatures to the mid to low 80's later this week.

In the meantime, be sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Do not overdo it with physical activity, wear cool colors and loose clothing, and if you're feeling faint, find some shade!
