Foo Fighters performed on the final night of CBS’ Late Show With David Letterman last night (May 20.) The group did a live rendition of their song “Everlong” while clips and highlights from Letterman’s 33 years as a talk show host were shown. Check out the video above.

Coincidentally, 18 years ago yesterday, Foo Fighters’ album The Colour and the Shape was released. “Everlong” was their second single off that disc back in 1997 and peaked at number four on Billboard’s US Mainstream Rock chart. It also happens to be David Letterman's favorite song from the group.

It seems fitting that Foo Fighters’ were given the task of being the last performers on Late Show With David Letterman, as the band have a long history with the show and its host. Back in 2000, after recovering from quintuple bypass heart surgery, Letterman asked the Foo Fighters to play “Everlong,” on his first show back after the operation. (Check out that performance below.) And only last year, the group had a week-long residency on Letterman where they performed several of their songs with special guests like HeartZac Brown and Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen

David Letterman certainly went out with style. Earlier this week, Eddie Vedder was on the late night show and performed “Better Man” with Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra. You can catch his performance here. And while Letterman's Late Show hosting career just came to a close, the Foo Fighters are nowhere near finished. The band kick off a massive North American tour on July 4 in Washington D.C. and will play the U.S. and Canada through Oct. 7.
