The company that owns Iowa's only nuclear power plant says that it could be closing down in 2025. NextEra Energy said that the main customer for Duane Arnold, Alliant Energy, will most likely not renew it's contract with the plant when it expires in eight years.

NextEra stated that without that extension, Duane Arnold would likely close at the end of 2025. The plant is licensed to operate through 2034. An Alliant spokesperson said that the company has not made a final decision on the contract, but is looking at alternatives.

The closing of the plant would be a huge blow to Linn County. The plant employs nearly 600 people and is one of the largest employers in the county. The plant has been in operation since 1975.

NextEra says it will continue contract negotiations with Alliant Energy.
