The Chicago Cubs last postseason appearance was in 2008 while the St. Louis Cardinals have been to the World Series twice in the last four years. Still, the two teams are headed toward something unprecedented in the history of the two franchises.

The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals have never been in postseason play during the same year. NEVER. It was a virtual impossibility until 1994 when a wild card team was added to the postseason. In 2012, a second wild card team was added in each league. Still, if the playoffs were to begin today (Monday) BOTH would be in the postseason. Imagine that for a moment. The excitement in this part of the country would be at a fevered pitch. And as a Cardinals fan, I'd be a nervous wreck. After all, just imagine being the team that loses to Chicago in the National League Championship Series and returns the Cubs to the World Series for the first time since 1945. I definitely don't want that to be my team. Do you?
