It's seems like a case of adding insult to injury, when a Robins man was charged with using fireworks within Cedar Rapids city limits, after losing parts of several fingers in a fireworks explosion last week.

Cops issued a misdemeanor charge against 19 year old Issac Hassan following the fireworks accident that sent him to a local hospital.

Sounds like a no-win situation. And in many ways, that is exactly what it is.

According to Gazette reports, local law enforcement is cracking down on fireworks usage in communities where ironically, it is legal to purchase them, but not to light them off.

Here are a few of the communities in Eastern Iowa that are prohibiting or restricting fireworks usage.

  • Cedar Rapids: Use prohibited
  •  Ely: Use limited to 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., June 25 to July 8; 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., July 4
  •  Springville: Use limited to 4 to 11 p.m., July 4
  •  Marion: Use limited to noon to 11 p.m., July 4
  •  Iowa City: Use prohibited
  •  Coralville: Use prohibited
  •  North Liberty: Use prohibited

My advice? Don't spend your money on fireworks. Instead, enjoy one of the many big free displays in the area and leave the fireworks to the pros.

While that may not satisfy the urges of the pyro-teenager in all of us, it will save you a few bucks and maybe a finger or two.
