It's been a wild, wacky first half of the college football season, filled with surprises.

Hawk fans, no need to look down. Iowa is 4-2 for the year. The defense against Minnesota was the defense we thought we'd see all year. Sure the North Dakota State and Northwestern games still sting but in the two defeats, we were within a touchdown of winning the game.

Here's a few teams across the country that have really disappointed the college football experts.

Stanford: They looked like world beaters when they took care of Iowa in the Rose Bowl in January. Some had Stanford as an outside shot of being the National Champions. Standford is on the outside looking in now. They've lost two in a row with the first being at Washington 44-6. Stanford scored a touchdown late otherwise, they would have been skunked. Then last Saturday, at home, they lost to Washington State 42-16. I do have to admit, I am enjoying seeing Stanford get beat... take that Stanford marching band!!!

Notre Dame: The experts were high on Notre Dame this year. The Irish last season ended the year with a loss in the Fiesta Bowl to Ohio State. So far this year, they're 2-4. They lost an opening game double O.T. thriller to Texas 50-47, but that is about all the thrill the Irish fans have had this year. Besides the opening loss to Texas, they've lost to Michigan State and Duke at home and over the weekend lost to North Carolin State in a rain-soaked Hurricane Matthew mess.

Michigan State: Sparty won the Big Ten Title over Iowa last year by mere inches and then met eventual national champion Alabama. Sparty was an outside shot to win the Big Ten East and they still can control that destiny. They've suffered two losses in a row with one being an O.T. defeat on the road to Indiana. However, the lackluster home loss to BYU on Saturday, 31-14, really has Sparty fans looking forward to basketball. Michigan State still has Michigan and Ohio State coming to East Lansing.

Oregon: The year started out promising as the Ducks were 2-0. A week three trip to Nebraska, which is never easy, resulted in a loss. Since then, it's been open season on the Ducks. Last Saturday they were defeated at home 70-21 by Washington. Four losses in a row. The Ducks only have two more home games left this season and four on the road. Looks like Duck season came early this year.
