"You know where you should go to try to meet people, Eric? The library!"

If I had a nickel for every time I heard this at work, I could pay off my current slate of overdue fines. I can be somewhat of an introvert, despite having a job that is quite the opposite. But, I am just not always comfortable heading out to packed bars and social events.

So, imagine how I felt when I heard about an event coming up at the Cedar Rapids downtown Public Library. It's called "Speed Friending" and evidently, it's exactly like speed dating, except you're only trying to make friends--at least to begin with.

What a great way to connect with new people who share similar interests, and even more specifically, similar interests in the world of reading and community culture. Here is what the Facebook posting says about the event:

Are you a Native of Cedar Rapids? An out-of-stater, or perhaps from even further a-field? Whether you’ve been here for years, are a transplant, young or old, come and join us for speed-friending. Meet and mingle with your community, take precious minutes to get to know someone who could turn out to be your new best friend! All ages are welcome. There will be a session at 10am and 11.30am. Light refreshments will be provided.

I am so there. So, if you like to make friends, but the bar scene isn't your thing, register now for one of two "Speed Friending" sessions on Saturday, May 26 at the downtown library, 450 1st St. SE. See more details from the event page here.
