A late-evening traffic stop in Cedar Rapids Tuesday ended with a suspect being fatally wounded.

Cedar Rapids police report they stopped a vehicle in the 3200 block of Ravenwood Terrace NW last night just after 10:30. There were three people inside who were suspected of drug-related activity at a drug store nearby. When the vehicle was stopped as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation, one person fled on foot. Two Cedar Rapids police officers and a department K9 tracked down the suspect in that same block of Ravenwood. While police were beginning to arrest the man, he fired a gun at officers. Officers then exchanged gunfire and the suspect was fatally wounded.

Cedar Rapids Police say only that the suspect killed was a male in his early 20's. His name will be released following notification of next of kin.

The two police officers and K9 were not injured. Both officers will be placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy. Their names will be released following interviews regarding the incident, which are expected to take place by the end of the week.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation will be handling the investigation.
