Following a three-month investigation, a 35-year-old Cedar Rapids man has been arrested on charges stemming from an accident on County Home Road that killed two people.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office reports that at 4:57 today (February 10, 2017), Keith Furne of Cedar Rapids was taken into custody. He faces three charges. They are:

  • Two counts of Homicide by Vehicle
  • One count of Reckless Driving Resulting in Serious Injury

The charges are related to an accident which happened the afternoon of November 3, 2016 at County Home Road and North Troy Road. Keith Furne was the driver of a Chevy Silverado that rear-ended a Chevy Aveo that was stopped to make a left turn onto North Troy Road. There were five people in the Chevy Aveo, two of which were killed in the accident. All three of the other passengers in the vehicle were taken to University of Iowa Hospitals for treatment.

According to The Gazette, a criminal complaint says that Furne told investigators he was texting at the time of the accident. A search warrant on the Crash Data Retrieval box of Furne's truck showed he was traveling 60 miles-per-hour for more than two seconds prior to the crash and that he never braked before the accident.

Investigators say that data from Furne's cell phone showed he had been both sending and receiving texts prior to the accident and was writing a text at the time of the crash.

Furne was taken to the Linn County Correctional Center after his arrest, where he awaits his arraignment. The total bond for the charges is $100,000, cash only.
