Cedar Rapids has taken one step closer in it's bid to being name one of the five medical marijuana dispensaries in the state.

Mayor Brad Hart has endorsed an application by MedPharm for a medical marijuana dispensary in Cedar Rapids.

In his letter to the Iowa Department of Public Health, Hart wrote: “I believe MedPharm Iowa would act as a partner with the city of Cedar Rapids in achieving our goal of becoming a city that supports residents’ health needs...”

Applications to become one of five dispensaries in Iowa were due today. Sioux City has also submitted a letter in support of MedPharm.

The Iowa Department of Public Health has received 71 letters of intent from 22 entities.

According to the Gazette, Sarah Reisetter, deputy director for the public health department said “It remains to be seen how many applications we will actually receive”

The state will review all the applications and plans to license dispensaries by April 1.
