"Black Friday" sales aren't just held the day after Thanksgiving anymore. With online shopping ever-growing, it becomes a week-long, if not month-log endeavor for retailers. Stores are closing left and right, those remaining open are starting the game earlier every year, to offer deep discounts to customers to kick off the holiday shopping season.

WalletHub recently took a look at the best stores in the country for Black Friday deals, and several of their Top 10 still have locations in Cedar Rapids.

First, some general findings from the study.

  • The overall average Black Friday discount customers should look for this year is 37 percent.
  • Apparel and Accessories is the category with the best average discounts at just over 23 percent off for Black Friday deals.
  • The category with the lowest average Black Friday discount? Books, movies and DVDs. Not very surprising as those categories have become mainstays of the digital and online shopping retail world that was the beginning of the brick-and-mortar retailer decline in the first place. The physical items in this category are just not as popular anymore.

The Top 5 retailers for Black Friday discounts were:

  • Belk
  • JCPenney
  • Stage (owners of Gordman's)
  • Kohls
  • New York and Company

Other stores in the Top 10 with Corridor locations were Payless Shoe Source and Dick's Sporting Goods.
