Too much of a good thing may hinder progress at the Eastern Iowa Airport.

While they recently announced a record number of passengers in 2017, they will also need more space to accommodate those passengers than they initially anticipated. A $50 million expansion project was approved and has been underway since 2014. But larger aircraft and more flights to more destinations may mean they have to change their expansion plans further to make more room.

The current phase of the project is to remodel the terminal, and is scheduled to finish in 2019. At that time the next phase may be delayed by another year to work out the space issues. Beyond additional seating for passengers waiting to board, they may also need to widen the concourse for extra separation between aircraft.
