2 People Die Trying To Help A Stalled Vehicle on Iowa Roadway

Two people trying to help a stalled vehicle get off a roadway have died after being struck by oncoming traffic.

The Des Moines Register reports that the Iowa State Patrol stated in a report that an SUV ran out of gas and stopped in the right lane of northbound Highway 330 at mile marker 11 at around 3:51 p.m. on Monday. Occupants of the SUV along with other drivers who had stopped to help were pushing the vehicle off the roadway when they were struck by another driver. The Register reports that the SUV came to rest in a ditch while the other car stopped on the west shoulder.

According to the Register, 61-year-old Tony Roberts of Marshalltown died from his injuries. The other person who was killed has not yet been identified pending the notification of the family. The State Patrol report did not say who was the driver of the SUV and who had stopped off to help.

The occupants of the working car, 38-year-old Brett Swanson of Omaha, and the driver, 43-year-old Andrew Brodahl of Grundy Center, were both injured. The Register reports that they were both taken to area hospitals.
